Les projets de R&D (traitant de la traduction et du multilinguisme) financés par la Commission Européenne viennent d'être choisis.

La Commission Européenne a annoncé le résultat. Les financements des projets touchant aux langues, la traduction et les technologies et outils associés sont actés (et soumis encore à la signature des différents acteurs). Nous reprenons la liste des projets élus et les résultats attendus, vous pourrez en savoir sur le site de Cordis.

Ces projets doivent débuter cette année et durer 3 ans. Multi-acteurs, multi-pays et ambitieux par leur contenu comme la plupart des projets de recherche financés par la commission, le challenge est grand. Certains nous intéressent fortement en tant que société de traduction, d'autres en tant qu'utilisateur individuel.

L'impact de ces projets sera potentiellement fort : d'un point de vue purement technologique (mémorisation, traduction automatique hybride, flux de données) et d'un point de vue de la chaîne de valeur de l'industrie de la traduction. Un projet comme Flavius (et ce n'est pas pour rien que des acteurs tels que jfg-networks sont présents) peut impacter fortement les relations entre les acteurs qui publient les contenus et ceux qui les écrivent, voire ceux qui les monétisent s'ils sont différents, ceux qui les traduisent dans un contexte multilingue et internet, etc.

Mais attention, ce sont des projets à 3 ans, lourds à gérer, et ambitieux. Tous n'aboutiront pas, malheureusement. Par contre, tous aboutiront à des avancées (notamment techno), qu'il faudra ensuite transformer (notamment en services ou produits). 

Les projets retenus :

Projet 1 : ATLAS – Applied Techology for Language-Aided CMS

Résultats attendu : The single most important tangible output of the project will be the successful completion and public release (under an open-source licence) of the multilingual platform for web content management ATLAS, which powers i-Publisher, i-Librarian and EUDocLib.

Projet 2 : EASTIN-CL – Crosslingual and multimodal Search in a Portal for Support of Assisted Living

Résultats attendu : EASTIN-CL will make the portal more user-friendly, cross lingual and speech-enabled. The result will lead to an improved service with higher visibility in Europe for both professionals and end users.

Projet 3 : FLAVIUS – Foreign LAnguage Versions of Internet and User generated Sites

Résultats attendu : The project will result in an online platform accessible to website owners which will enable them to generate multilingual versions of their websites quickly and efficiently. It will include all necessary functionalities to ensure that the translated pages reach an acceptable level of quality, like source text correction, translation curtomisation and post-edition.

Projet 4 : GALATEAS – Generalized Analysis of Logs for Automatic Translation and Episodic Analysis of Searches

Résultats attendu : GALATEAS will set up two web services:

• LangLog: it will analyse transaction logs containing queries to search engines for a given content provider. By applying statistical technologies coupled with language oriented services, it will produce reports concerning the informational needs of the users accessing that particular aggregation. In other words, the same way in which standard log analysis systems provide generalisations of paths of users inside a web site, LangLog will provide generalisations of the actions that information seekers perform in order to find content inside a searchable collection of digital objects. LangLog will provide services for at least seven languages, namely Italian, French, English, German, Dutch, Modern Arabic and Polish.
• QueryTrans: it will translate queries coming from an external search engine into several target languages: the external search engine will use these translations to return to the user results into languages different from the one in which the query was formulated.

Projet 5 : iTRANSLATE4 – Internet Translators for all European Languages

Résultats attendu : The project will develop the first European website that provides free online translation from any European language to any other. Moreover, through the competitive approaches, users will be ensured to use the best qualilty translator available.

Projet 6 : LetsMT! - Platform for Online Sharing of Training Data and Building User Tailored MT

Résultats attendu : The project will deliver the following core functionalities:

• website for upload of parallel corpora and building of specific MT solutions,
• website for translation where source text can be inserted and translated,
• translation widget provided for free inclusion into websites to translate their content,
• browser plug-ins or add-ons that would allow the quickest access to translation,
• web service for integration in CAT tools and other applications.

Projet 7 : MORMED – Multilingual Organic Information Management in the Medical Domain

Résultats attendu : The project will result in a novel translation service focused on thematic communities and will create an international online community without the constraint of language barriers. People affected by Lupus or the Antiphospholipid Syndrome (Hughes Syndrome), as well as their family members, will have immediate benefits by accessing a wealth of information that otherwise would not be accessible or scattered throughout the Internet with varying degrees of reliability. They will be able to share their experience and also discuss with others affected by the same problems. The same holds true for health professionals, such as GPs and medical experts, who will be able to treat their patients in an even more focused and informed fashion. Research results will be made available more quickly for diagnosing and treating patients, and practical results as well as specific cases could be made available immediately to researchers involved both in clinical and pharmaceutical research.

Projet 8 : MULTILINGUAL WEB – Advancing the Multilingual Web, Thematic Network

Résultats attendu : The project will raise the visibility of available standards and best practices, encourage their use and promote involvement in the development of new standards. The workshops will seek broad participation of technology and content providers as well as users. The recommendations arising from those meetings will address the creation and management of multilingual web sites and content, contain the related costs and eliminate inefficiencies associated with producing multilingual content. Finally, the workshops will study ways of capitalising on the rich multilingual and multicultural contribution of online communities. Specific tools for improving the multilingual Web will be developed. These include a validator which is similar to the W3C's widely used HTML validator. It will enable content authors to check and improve the "language friendliness" of their web pages. Training materials will be produced. Test results will be made available that help to determine gaps in web page design and indicate ways to improve multilingual web content production.

Projet 9  : PLuTO – Patent Language Translations Online

Résultats attendu : By the end of the project duration, PLuTO will also have an indexing engine, such that it will not only be used for machine translation, but also as a complete tool for prior art search by professional patent searchers or individual inventors. On top of all this, PLuTO will be a professional Web 2.0 application, where translations provided or corrected by one user will improve the translation quality of subsequent translations for all users. Patent experts will participate in all stages of the solution, from the initial design phase, through its iterative improvements, to the final evaluation of the pilot. Ultimately, users will be able to shape the result of the project to match their concrete needs and pain points. It is considered that the most important tangible output of PLuTO the web-based collaborative platform for patent searchers, translators and lawyers, exploited by a joint SME.
